Pourquoi c'est difficile
Warranty disputes on racking almost always turn on scope rather than duration, and the disputed items are predictable.
- Covered load cases are frequently left implicit, so a structure designed to one wind speed cannot be compared against the warranty basis without the calculation report
- Environmental exposure class determines whether the coating and fastener specification is inside the covered conditions, and it is often unstated in the warranty document
- Maintenance conditions are frequently attached to structural warranties, and failing to carry out the specified inspections can void cover
- Exclusions for site modifications are common, so any change made during installation may remove the affected components from cover
- Coating and fastener cover is often treated separately from structural cover, with different durations and different claim criteria
- The remedy matters as much as the obligation: a warranty that obliges the supplier to supply replacement parts does not cover the cost of installing them
Exigences d'ingénierie
These are the terms a racking warranty should define before it is accepted.
- Covered load cases with the design basis stated, so the warranty can be compared against the project structural calculation
- Covered environmental exposure class, expressed as a corrosivity category rather than a verbal description of the site
- Service design life and the relationship between it and the warranty term, since these are different figures serving different purposes
- Maintenance conditions the owner must satisfy, with the inspection items, intervals and acceptance criteria stated
- Exclusions, including the treatment of site modifications, non-standard installation and conditions outside the design basis
- Claim procedure and remedy, stating what the supplier provides and whether the remedy covers removal, replacement and reinstatement

Selection guidance: read the covered load cases before the term. A ten-year warranty against a lower wind speed than the site requires provides no protection at all, and the term is irrelevant.
Comment nous résolvons le problème
- Warranty documentation stating covered load cases and the corresponding design basis, so it can be checked against the project calculation
- Environmental exposure class expressed as a corrosivity category, with coating and fastener specifications referenced so compliance is verifiable
- Service design life and warranty term stated separately, with the difference between them explained rather than conflated
- Maintenance schedule supplied with the structure, defining the inspections and acceptance criteria that preserve cover
- Exclusions written explicitly, including the treatment of site modification and of conditions outside the design basis
- Claim procedure with a defined remedy, including whether replacement parts, labour or reinstatement are covered
Au-delà de la structure
- Documentation indexed to the warranty conditions, so an owner can demonstrate compliance during a claim rather than reconstruct it
- Coating and fastener cover stated separately where their duration or criteria differ from the structural cover

- A 200 MW financed project in Spain where the warranty load cases were checked against the project wind calculation before acceptance, avoiding a mismatch in design basis.
- A 150 MW project in the Netherlands where the maintenance schedule attached to the structural warranty was incorporated into the owner O&M plan to preserve cover.
- A 250 MW portfolio in the United States where coating and structural cover carried different durations, and both were documented separately in the asset register.
- The warranty term carries no cost by itself, but the covered conditions determine how much protection is actually being purchased
- Maintenance obligations attached to the warranty are a real operating cost, and they should be included in the lifecycle budget rather than treated as optional
- Coating and fastener cover is where most claims arise in aggressive environments, so its terms deserve the same attention as the structural term
- A warranty that covers replacement parts but not installation labour leaves the largest cost with the owner, which is a material difference between otherwise similar offers
- Documenting compliance with warranty conditions during operation is inexpensive and is what makes a claim payable rather than arguable
