A structural warranty is only as useful as its definitions. Two warranties that both run for ten years can differ enormously in what they cover, because the load cases, the environmental exposure classes, the maintenance conditions and the exclusions determine whether a claim is payable long before its duration matters.

Reading a racking warranty properly means establishing four things: what is covered, under what load cases and exposure conditions, what the owner must do to preserve cover, and what happens when a claim is made. A warranty that answers those four questions is worth more than one that leads with its term.

Warranty disputes on racking almost always turn on scope rather than duration, and the disputed items are predictable.

  • Covered load cases are frequently left implicit, so a structure designed to one wind speed cannot be compared against the warranty basis without the calculation report
  • Environmental exposure class determines whether the coating and fastener specification is inside the covered conditions, and it is often unstated in the warranty document
  • Maintenance conditions are frequently attached to structural warranties, and failing to carry out the specified inspections can void cover
  • Exclusions for site modifications are common, so any change made during installation may remove the affected components from cover
  • Coating and fastener cover is often treated separately from structural cover, with different durations and different claim criteria
  • The remedy matters as much as the obligation: a warranty that obliges the supplier to supply replacement parts does not cover the cost of installing them

Selection guidance: read the covered load cases before the term. A ten-year warranty against a lower wind speed than the site requires provides no protection at all, and the term is irrelevant.

Seguro de calidad

Cada punto de control genera un documento que su equipo de calidad puede archivar, y la inspección previa al envío está abierta a su inspector o a un tercero.

Documentación que usted recibe

La documentación es tan importante como el acero. Con cada entrega, recibirá certificados de prueba de fábrica con trazabilidad a los números de colada; registros de galvanizado por lote según la norma ISO 1461 o la norma que usted especifique; informes de inspección dimensional de las plantillas de preensamblaje; trazabilidad de lotes de pernos y herrajes; planos finales donde se realizaron adaptaciones en obra; y un documento de garantía que detalla los casos de carga cubiertos, la vida útil de diseño y los procedimientos de reclamación. Todo está indexado, por lo que su registro de activos no depende de la memoria de un solo ingeniero.

Planificación de la vida útil y el mantenimiento

La viabilidad económica de los sistemas de montaje se decide al octavo año, no al firmar el contrato. El peso del galvanizado, la clase de recubrimiento de los sujetadores y la protección de los bordes determinan si la inspección del octavo año detecta un ajuste perfecto o manchas de óxido.   • A warranty that covers replacement parts but not installation labour leaves the largest cost with the owner, which is a material difference between otherwise similar offers
  • Documenting compliance with warranty conditions during operation is inexpensive and is what makes a claim payable rather than arguable

How long should a racking warranty run?
Structural warranties in the industry commonly run for ten years against a service design life of 25 to 30 years, with coating and fastener cover sometimes treated separately. The term is less important than the conditions attached to it. A ten-year warranty against the correct load cases and exposure class is worth more than a twenty-year warranty against conditions the site does not meet.
What typically voids a racking warranty?
Site modification is the most common, since cutting, drilling or re-welding a galvanized component removes the protective coating and changes the stress path. Failure to carry out the specified maintenance is the second, where the warranty is conditional on inspection. Using the structure outside its design basis, whether by exceeding the wind or snow case or by changing module format and weight, is the third.
Does the warranty cover coating corrosion?
Usually as a separate item with its own duration and its own criteria, which is why it needs to be read and documented independently. The relevant question is what corrosion condition and what environmental exposure class the cover applies to. Where the site corrosivity category exceeds the class the warranty is written against, coating claims may be excluded even when the structure itself is covered.
What documentation should the owner keep?
The calculation report stating the design load cases, the coating specification and batch records, the installation records including any site modification, and the maintenance inspection records against the schedule attached to the warranty. Keeping these indexed is what allows a claim to be substantiated from evidence rather than from recollection.
How are claims handled if the supplier changes over the warranty term?
The warranty is an obligation of the supplying entity, so its continued value depends on that entity continuing to exist and on the warranty being transferable. Buyers on long-hold assets frequently ask for the warranty to be assignable and for the underlying production records to be held by the project rather than only by the supplier, so the evidence survives a change in ownership or supplier status.
