An asset owner manages a fleet, not a project. The structure that matters is the one that behaves consistently across sites, because consistency is what makes maintenance procedures transferable, spares manageable and performance comparable between assets.

Standardising racking across a portfolio is therefore an asset management decision rather than a procurement one. It constrains the design freedom available at each site in exchange for a fleet that can be operated with one procedure, one spares catalogue and one set of performance assumptions.

Pourquoi c'est difficile

Portfolio standardisation pays back through operations, and the mechanisms are specific to how a fleet is actually run.

  • A common structure family means one maintenance procedure, so crews move between sites without retraining and workload can be balanced across the fleet
  • Fleet spares become a single catalogue with defined stock levels, rather than an accumulation of site-specific parts that are difficult to locate years later
  • Comparable structures make site-to-site performance comparison meaningful, which is how an owner identifies underperformance over time
  • Certification and warranty documentation become a single indexed set rather than a site-by-site collection requiring separate review
  • Module and inverter replacements during the asset life can be assessed once against the standard rather than site by site
  • Portfolio standardisation strengthens the divestment case, since a buyer inherits a documented and consistent asset family

Exigences d'ingénierie

These are the elements of a workable portfolio racking standard.

  • A defined structure family with the variable parameters listed: wind, seismic, soil, coating class, module format and tilt or rotation range
  • A configuration matrix recording each site’s parameter values, maintained as a live document across the portfolio
  • A single spares catalogue with stock levels set by environment class and capacity, and a defined storage and rotation procedure
  • One documentation template, so as-built sets, warranty terms and quality records are directly comparable between sites
  • Change control through the parameter set, so module or code updates are assessed once against the fleet rather than per site
  • A maintenance procedure and inspection checklist applicable across the fleet, with acceptance criteria stated

Selection guidance: define the standard before the fleet grows. Standardisation retrofitted to an existing portfolio can harmonise documentation and spares but cannot recover the design divergence already built.

Comment nous résolvons le problème

  • One structure family across the portfolio, with site variation expressed as parameters rather than as separate designs
  • A configuration matrix maintained centrally, so any site’s parameters can be retrieved and applied to the next acquisition
  • A single spares catalogue with stock levels by environment class, replacing site-specific inventories
  • One documentation template issued per site, making as-built and warranty records comparable across the fleet
  • A fleet maintenance procedure with stated inspection intervals and acceptance criteria
  • Change control through the parameter set, so a module or code change is assessed once and applied consistently

Au-delà de la structure

  • Support through a change of O&M contractor, so the standard survives a transfer of operational responsibility
  • Documentation held centrally as well as per site, so fleet records survive personnel change

  • A 12-site, 400 MW owner portfolio standardised on one structure family, with a single spares catalogue serving the whole fleet.
  • An owner-operator in the United States holding one clamp and fastener family across six utility-scale sites, allowing maintenance crews to work across the fleet without retraining.
  • A European portfolio where a module replacement assessment was performed once against the standard rather than site by site, reducing engineering effort and downtime.

  • Standardisation constrains design freedom at each site, and the resulting unit-price premium is usually small relative to the operational saving
  • Fleet spares cost falls substantially, because stock levels are set for one family rather than accumulated site by site
  • Maintenance cost per site falls with a common procedure, since crew deployment, training and inspection intervals are consistent
  • Documentation and certification cost falls per site, since the same set is adapted rather than prepared from scratch
  • The divestment benefit is real but difficult to quantify, and it appears as reduced due diligence effort and a cleaner asset story

Foire aux questions

Is portfolio standardisation worth the design constraint?
For owners with three or more comparable sites, usually yes. The constraint is real: a site with unusual conditions gets a structure that is adequate rather than optimal, and the unit price may carry a small premium. The return comes from operations, spares and documentation across the fleet, and it compounds over a 25-year asset life. For a single-asset owner the standard has no fleet to serve and the calculation is different.
What should be standard and what should vary?
Standard: the structural family, connection details, rail sections, clamp families and foundation head design. Variable: the parameters those elements respond to, which are wind speed and terrain, seismic, soil class, coating class, module format and tilt or rotation range. That division is what allows one procedure and one spares catalogue to serve a fleet whose sites genuinely differ.
How do we handle a site that does not fit the standard?
Explicitly, and with a documented reason. The options are to accept a conservative structure that meets the standard, to extend the standard with a new parameter value that is then available to future sites, or to design that site outside the standard and record the exception. The one approach that fails is designing it outside the standard without recording it, because the fleet documentation then no longer describes the fleet.
Does standardisation help with divestment?
It does, through reduced due diligence effort and a clearer asset story. A buyer reviewing a portfolio with one structure family, one documentation set and a consistent spares catalogue can assess technical risk far faster than one facing a collection of heterogeneous assets. That translates into lower perceived risk and a smoother transaction, even if it is difficult to quantify in advance.
How does an existing portfolio adopt a standard?
By harmonising what can be harmonised rather than by rebuilding. The practical steps are to define the standard going forward, map the existing fleet against it, harmonise documentation and spares immediately, and apply the standard at replacement points such as module change, repowering or major maintenance. The design divergence already built cannot be recovered, but the operational and documentation divergence can.
